We hope these frequently asked questions will provide answers to the most common questions about UCTech at Santa Barbara. In the meantime, please send your questions to info@uctech.ucsb.edu. We also monitor the #uctech-conference channel on the UCTech Slack site. At the conference, we will staff an Information Booth at Corwin Pavilion and friendly volunteers will be trained to answer just about any question posed to them.

General

UC parking permits are required 7 days per week. Be cautious of where you park. Guests are responsible for following parking rules and for any penalties. Please note that UCSB is a pedestrian campus and parking is limited. Your parking lot may not necessarily be close to your session location. Please see the campus map.

Participants staying in HOTELS or other OFF CAMPUS accommodations without a UC permit should drive directly to Parking Structure 22. Machines selling “Pay & Display” permits are located in this lot.

For those with a UC permit, UC reciprocity will be honored for faculty and staff in parking lot 22-- see the question, Can I use my (other UC campus) parking permit at UC Santa Barbara? Please be sure your UC parking permit is clearly displayed. You will not need to pay for a parking permit.

Follow the driving directions and steps for purchasing a permit if you are coming from OFF-CAMPUS accommodations. Lot 22 is a large parking structure a little further away that offers plenty of parking, as well as recharge stations for electric and plug-in vehicles.

You may purchase a permit from the machines in Lot 22 Parking Structure following these steps:

  • Select “UCTECH” from the menu on the machine and choose the number of days you would like to purchase.
  • Machines DO NOT GIVE CASH CHANGE, but do accept credit/debit cards.
  • Purchase the permit and place on the dashboard of your car on the driver’s side, so that it is VISIBLE from outside the car.

University of California campuses offer reciprocity to faculty and staff for parking permits. For those with a UC permit, UC reciprocity will be honored for faculty and staff only in parking lot 22. Please be sure your UC parking permit is clearly displayed. You will not need to pay for a parking permit.

The opening reception at Manzanita Village Las Encinas Quad is outside. Summer weather in Santa Barbara is usually quite pleasant; the days are warm (75ºF) and the nights are cool (55ºF) with occasional fog or overcast skies. We recommend a sweater or light coat for evenings. UCSB is a walking campus, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Also, don't forget to wear sunscreen (we will have sunscreen at registration).

No. UCTech activities are intended for conference attendees only.

Attendees will be able to request accommodations during the registration process. Our accommodations coordinator will make the necessary arrangements and contact you if they need additional information. For general questions about accessibility at the conference, the contact information for our accommodations coordinator will also be available at the time of registration.

We use eduroam at UC Santa Barbara. If you're an eduroam user, you should automatically connect when you're on our campus. If you're not an eduroam user and you’re lodging on-campus, guest WiFi accounts will be available at check-in. Additional WiFi accounts will be available at the conference registration desk.

Conference registration cancellations will be processed less a $4.20 processing fee if requests are received by emailing registration@uctech.ucsb.edu by June 28, 2019. No refunds will be issued after June 28. Please allow 5 business days to process credit card refunds.

Manzanita Housing Cancellation Policy: All cancellations or requests for a refund must be emailed to conferences@housing.ucsb.edu. A $50 per registrant cancellation fee will be retained or due for ALL accommodation reservations cancelled less than 10 working days prior to the conference start date.Cancellations after scheduled check-in date (or "no show") will result in forfeiture of all fees (any exception requests are to be made in writing to the Conference & Hospitality Services Director).

Call 911 for emergencies or immediate response 24 hours a day. Visit the campus emergency phone number site for numbers and links: www.ucsb.edu/contact/emergency

Additionally, you can subscribe to the UCSB Alert system. The UCSB Alert system is intended to enhance and promote safety on campus by providing community members and visitors with timely access to important information.

UCTech attendees who would like to receive temporary access to UCSB Alerts can subscribe to our NIXLE channel by texting UCSBVisitor to 888777. (Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency varies.)

Temporary subscriptions to UCSBAlert for UCTech expire on July 20, 2019, but can also be canceled by replying STOP at any time.

For alerts and information about incidents that occur outside of Clery geography (e.g., Isla Vista, Goleta, Santa Barbara) the campus community is encouraged to sign up for Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency alerts in Goleta or Santa Barbara. For additional information on the UCSB Alert system please visit the UC Santa Barbara Police Department website.

You can ask a UCTech volunteer (you'll see them wearing the navy blue polo shirts with the UCTech logo), talk to someone at the Information Booth in Corwin Pavilion, or email info@uctech.ucsb.edu.

Please go to the Information Booth at Corwin Pavilion to inquire about lost and found items.

The Contemplation Lounge on the third floor of the UCen provides space for quiet prayer and/or contemplation. Located in the corridor next to the study lounge, the Contemplation Lounge is religiously neutral, so please respect the space by keeping your prayers quiet and the room clean.

Sessions

Signing up for sessions in advance helps you manage your schedule and it also helps the conference organizers gauge interest in the sessions and assign them to the appropriately sized room spaces. Note, if you added a session to your schedule, it does not mean that you have a reserved spot. Show up to the session early to make sure you have a seat as there are capacity limits to each room and we cannot exceed them.

Prepare your slide deck and upload a copy to a cloud storage location TBD. Session presenters will receive an email with further preparation instructions and where to upload the presentations. Since we plan to use Zoom to record sessions on a designated laptop in each breakout room, the presentations must have been uploaded to the cloud storage location provided.

Yes, all sessions will be recorded using Zoom. Each breakout room will have a laptop to capture the presentation and speaker’s or panel members’ audio. We will not have cameras for the speaker or the audience members. The goal is not to live-cast the sessions, but rather to make the slides, recordings of the slides and audio from the presentations available at a later date.

Large events, such as the distinguished speakers and award ceremonies, will be also be recorded. In this case, there will be a camera focused on the stage and some audience members may be captured as well.

All videos will be shared after the conference on the UCTech 2019 website. We are still determining the best method of hosting the videos.

If you need some time to prepare or review your session materials during the conference, we have allocated a space. It will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you have something to share but don't want to spend a lot of time doing it, then a Lightning Talk might be what you're looking for. Lightning Talks are an opportunity to give a very short (5 minutes max!) presentation to the UC-wide tech community. Go to this page for more information on how they will work.

UCCSC 2018 offered attendees the chance to host Birds of a Feather (BoFs) small group presentations during the daily lunch breaks. However, we will not offer BoFs for this year's UCTech Conference. Instead, you may submit a proposal or schedule a pre- or post-conference workshop.

Pre-conference option: Monday, July 15 is available for morning and afternoon workshops. Workshops must conclude before the Monday Night Reception dinner beginning at 5 p.m.

Post-conference option: Thursday, July 18 is available for morning, afternoon, and evening workshops.

If you are interested in hosting a pre- or post-conference workshop, you can find information here.
