Making Online Course Quality Scalable with a Faculty-Friendly Development Tool
Faculty are increasingly using Canvas to enhance their face-to-face classes and this has led to a growing interest in online and hybrid courses, which is only further encouraged by our university’s Digital Learning Initiative. However, our department doesn’t have the resources to work directly with every interested faculty member. We needed to find a scalable solution that would allow for interested faculty to develop quality online and hybrid courses and digital course components without having to work directly with our department.
To address this need, we created a checklist of the essential requirements of a high-quality online course and merged it with a Canvas template. We put the checklist itself as a file in the template and provided prompts in the relevant sections of the template that would guide faculty to implement the essential requirements. Faculty who are developing a fully online or hybrid course or who would like to integrate digital components into their face-to-face courses can request to have the template copied into their course site and use the template as a guide to build out the course components.
In this session, we will review the process we went through to develop the checklist and Canvas template, share the final product, and discuss our next steps for campus-wide implementation and evaluation.
